PLAYING AND BALANCE – DESIGNING WITH LANDSCAPE (Goriska Brda, SLOV)

The project in Goriška Brda is focusing on the relation between the artificial landscape and its urban settlements and the potentials of these patterns for new urban developments.

The economical potentials (wine production) of Goriška Brda transformed the landscape of the area impressively. Although Goriška Brda is still the most important wine area in the Republic of Slovenia, it has to deal with the typical treatments of European rural areas. Settlements and rural lifestyles are structural changing. The reduction in area farmed and the disintegration of the rural society disconnect the link between society and land. The mostly elderly, farming generation is slowly becoming extinct and the younger people looking for jobs and education are forced to leave Goriška Brda. Vacant housing units in the villages are the result of the disappearance of commercial activities.

We ask you to make a design which enhances a sustainable quality of the future developing of Goriška Brda.

Results

Final presentation:
At the end of the course you present a new landscape design which could be used to implement new urban developments. According to the network theory it might be interesting to compare the relation between the cultural heritage of the terraced landscape of Goriska Brda with artificial landscapes in the Netherlands. How is the landscape related to urban development’s and what are specific developments of the situation in Goriška Brda?

Course contents

Competencies:
In this Urban Nomads program you will develop  6 professional competencies: Concept, Urban Design, Analysis, Urban Research, Urban Strategy, Being aware of surroundings.
During 1 semester you will work continuously and integrally on these competencies. You work individual and you will get weekly feedback in classes on your products. This project includes 2 design weeks and a final presentation.

Feedback on products:
Once a week you get individual feedback on the design products in the studio of Urban Nomads (location, day and time have to be announced)

Final presentation:
At the end of the course you will present your project to professionals.

Portfolio:
After the final presentation your portfolio will be accessed by certificated assessors on the 6 competencies. You will receive a certificate

Design week 1: vistiting the terraced landscape of Goriska Brda

Design weeks

The first design week is on the project site in Goriska Brda. You stay in Šmartno and the workshop is in a winery in Dobrovo. We start with lectures about the landscape and the cultural heritage of Goriska Brda and we do excursions to different wine yards and typical landscapes of Goriska Brda. After that (day 2 till 5) you develop a concept together with students of architecture from the  University of Ljubljana. In the second design week (in our design studio) you will learn to use models as an analyze- and research tool to improve your design.
