WATERFRONT NAPOLI (Naples,
Italy)
Design week 2: study of the coastline in Schiermonnikoog
As many
cities on the Mediterranean coast, the city of Naples is confronted with
enormous changes in the harbor- and the
shipping sector. The excising docks and harbors have to be transformed to
fulfill the needs of the global shipping en cruise industry. This means that
the industrial character of Naples waterfront, which is mainly based on harbor
activities has to be reconstructed. Of course this offers enormous potentials
for the city and the people of Naples.
If the industrial bench needs to be reconstructed and modernized, the city could be connected with the waterfront again. This new spot on the seaside is predestinated for new housing developments.. The city waterfront of Naples has two different characteristics. The part Eastwards of the Castel dell’ Ovo , which is mainly used for harbor and industrial activities. The west coast of Castel dell’ Ovo was basically used to solve the infrastructure problems with a 4 lane road in east west direction. In 2012 the city of Naples used the Admirals Cup event to close the road for cars. The street is now only opened for bikes and pedestrians. It is now possible to promenade on the boulevard and in the summer weekends a lot of people using this advantage. This development creates new possibilities, as for example the connection between the Chiaia district and the waterfront and a new city beach for Naples. You are requested to make a new design of the Chiaia Waterfront. Connect the existing city with the sea and react with your design on the request of new housing in the city. Use new housing for the physical connection with the city. Give the existing park a new identity and design a new beach for the city. Design weeksThe
first design week is on the project site in Naples. We start by visiting the
project location in Chiaia with a guided tour through the historical center of
Naples. After that (day 2 till 4) you develop a concept of your design at the Università
degli Studi di Napoli Federico II. The lunch breaks will be used for short
excursions into the city on various topics. Of course a excursion to Pompeii is
a must. In the second design week you will use
the resilient cost line of the Waddenzee as a research reference project.
Therefore we stay on Schiermonnikoog and you will make a concept design for
local needs.
