Assignment

This track is organized in 2 blocks. During the first block (week 8 – week 11) you’ll work on a paper for the 2nd International Symposium “Global Cities and Cosmopolitan Dreams” in Barcelona. During the second block you’ll apply your theory on an urban design plan on a specific location in Barcelona which you may choose.
This research project is interested in exploring the changing ideal of the city, exploring its ideological foundations, its physical construction, its social and political significance, its aesthetic value and its metaphorical meaning. Your cosmopolitan dream should concern one of the 8 topics:

1. The Ideal City: Image, Idea and Meaning
2. Ethnic Enclaves, Multicultural Avenues
3. City Limits
4. Neighbors, Residents, Denizens and Citizens
5. Street Life
6. Model Cities
7. The Arrival City
8. City-Scapes: Urban Renewal and Future

You’ll present your paper at the symposium and afterwards you will look for a perfect location in Barcelona to apply your theory. You’ll develop fist concept sketches during a workshop (3 days) in Barcelona. Afterwards you’ll make a concept design of your idea in the Netherlands and you’ll present your urban design.
