CRUISE ISLAND (Madeira, PT)
You were dreaming since long time of a cruise in the Atlantic Ocean?
You are obsessed by the enormous tourist flows in cruise ship destinations, drowning the historical city centers of harbor cities?
In both cases this project should challenge you.
On this expedition you will work on the impact of typical cruise ship destinations. You will observe, analyze and research about the multifarious impacts of cruise ship tourism. Especially small towns and small islands are confronted with an increasing amount of cruise tourist. Cruise tourism is often the main income of these islands and forces the inhabitants to fulfil the special needs of these part-time guests. A lot of smaller harbor cities were literally drowned by tourist flows and starting to suffer from tourism. Not only the daily life of the inhabitants is threatened by tourists, but also the urban core and the city life of these very specialized harbor cities are changing.
You’ll start this project by a design week on a cruise ship trip to the Canary islands and Madeira (week 40). You will use the trip to develop first concepts and to reflect critical of this way of tourism. In the begin of November we will participate on the ICUA congress in Funchal (Madeira). This congress stresses the development of island and urban archipelagos. You will use the theoretical impact of the congress to develop first spatial concepts for the touristic boulevard in Madeira.

In this Urban Nomads program you will develop 6 professional competences: Concept, Urban Design, Analysis, Urban Research, Urban Strategy, Being aware of surroundings.
During 1 semester you will work continuously and integrally on these competences. You work individual and you will get weekly feedback in classes on your products. This project includes 2 design weeks and a final presentation.
Feedback on products:
Once a week (see schedule) you get individual feedback on the design products in the studio of Urban Nomads in Amsterdam.
At the end of the course you will present your project to professionals.
After the final presentation your portfolio will be accessed by certificated assessors on the 6 competences. You will receive a certificate
