Design project
‚La coer une gande metropole méditerranéenne‘ is the ambitions subtitle of the transformation of the waterfront from Marseille into a European metropolitan city. 480 hectares of the existing city should be transformed into a spectacular urban waterfront with a mixture of functions and different public areas. The project Euroméditerranée is devided into 2 development phases. The transformation of phase 1 (including ZAC Cité de la Méditerranée, ZAC Joliette, ZAC Belle-de-Mai, ZAC Sant Charles, ZAC Rue de la Republique and ZAC J4) started already in 1995 and offers idynamic urban spaces and famous architects, like the new tower Marseillaise from Jean Nouvel. The 2 phase is ready to start and will transform the quarter north of the CAM tower into a complete new city close to the waterfront.
During this expedition you will analyze the transformation of the Euroméditerrané waterfront and compare this development with reference cities like, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Naples and Rotterdam. You will design an urban development plan for parts of the Euroméditerranée area and develop a concept of a sustainable transformation of Marseilles waterfront. Design weeksThe first design week stresses the analyze of reference areas. You will work in the Rotterdam harbor (week 42) and analyze the transformation of it. You will research about the used strategical planning tools and the provided spatial qualities of the new designed areas. In the second design week in Marseille (week 48) you will work on your design concept and present it to professionals how are familiar with the context.
