FUTURE ISLANDS
Based on the theses of “Home Economics”, presented by Shumi Bose, Jack Self und Finn Williams at the Biennale di Architettura di Venezia 2016 this research makes new types of housing and settlements a subject of discussion. The exhibition proposes five new models for domestic life, curated through time of domestic occupancy. Through five distinct periods (hours, days, months, years and decades) it argues that by designing with time (as opposed to space) we can overturn the functionalist perspective in western architecture and reinstate a rationalist understanding of dwelling.
Urban Nomads develops these prototypes further, by designing innovative ground floor plans and creative spatial relations in a specific context. Relatively small and by a certain function dominated islands are perfect cases studies to distinguish inhabitants by temporally limited visitors. The new developed typologies are characterized by compact private areas and flexible, appropriated spaces. The transition between public and private space offers complex and undefined spatial categories. The balanced interaction convinced on different scale levels and ensures the quality of the urban design plan, corresponding sensitively with the characteristic landscape. Urban Nomads presented and evaluated the results of this project at the „Island Cities and Urban Archipelagos“ conference in November 2018 on Madeira and will publish the summery in the Island Studies Journal.
