CAMPI: THE OUTDOOR LIVING ROOMS OF VENICE

workshop 04 June - 02 July
When you walk through the narrow streets of Venice, you will regularly be surprised by beautiful open public spaces, called „campi” by the Venetians. A campo (‚field”) is not the same as a piazza (‚square”), but also here you will find playing children, gossiping ladies and drinking students; the campi are in fact the living rooms of the city.

Follow this workshop because:

  • you would like to experience and to give insight into an urban space by means of drawings and models
  • you would like to learn how you could research what urban elements are important for the spatial quality of a square
  • you would like to see the city of Venice and the Art Exhibition "La Biennale di Venezia" once in a different way (or from the perspective of an urban designer)

After the workshop your work will be part of a small exhibition about the Venetian Campi in Deventer.

You are introduced to the group and the teachers. The assignment will be explained, the final program will be announced and there is the opportunity to ask questions.

Day 1 (8 June, Amsterdam-Venice)
You´’ll fly from Amsterdam to Venice Marco Polo. From the airport, which is located north of the city, you will be brought to the town by boat: a spectacular entrance! You´’ll check in to the hostel, which is beautifully situated on the Canale della Giudecca.
In the afternoon we will do a city tour by foot, to experience the complex urban fabric.

Day 2 (9 June, Venice)
You´’ll try to get a grip on the spatial structure of the campo by sketching and drawing. You will get feedback from teachers and fellow students.

Day 3 (10 June, Venice)
In the morning you´’ll get a guided tour at the Art Exhibition "La Biennale di Venezia". The theme of the tour, will be art in the public space. In the afternoon there is time to visit the other parts of the exhibition on your own.

Day 4 (11 June, Venice)
You will complete the sketches and drawings of the square. You will get feedback from teachers and fellow students.
The afternoon is free.
